I purchased Gemma Hayes' new album "Night on my Side" at the weekend. I like it. While the sound is quite different to the subtle acoustic music on her brilliant debut EP 4.35 am, the fuller band sound actually suits her songs in so far as it covers up the weakness of her lyrics. There is something about the album that makes it more than the sum of it's parts, although individually the songs may seem unremarkable at first, the album demands repeated listens - revealing something new on each play. All told, it's worth checking out; she's an exciting new talent. Save 4 or 5 Euro and get the CD cheap on CDwow.ie. And if you want a preview, dotmusic has a mpeg of an acoustic session by her.
